Hawks Advance to NWAC Championships Match with 2-0 Victory over Tacoma
TUKWILA, Wash. — Columbia Basin (17-1-1, 8-1-1) secured a 2-0 victory over Tacoma (13-5-5, 9-2-4) in the semifinal of the 2025 NWAC Men's Soccer Championship on Friday at Starfire Stadium.
The Hawks secured a 2-0 victory over TCC with a well-executed performance in the second half. Jorge Perez opened the scoring in the 51st minute, assisted by David Ochoa and Sebastian Magana, putting the Hawks ahead. Despite the Titans' attempts to equalize, CBC keeper Caleb Coronel made crucial saves down the stretch to maintain the lead. In the final moments, Eric Hodges sealed the win for CBC with a goal in the 90th minute, assisted by Rudy Silva.
The match between the Hawks and Titans began with both teams establishing their goalkeepers, Caleb Coronel for CBC and Andrew Wagenblatt for TCC. CBC's early offensive efforts included a shot on goal by Jayson Castillo in the sixth minute, which was saved by Wagenblatt. TCC responded with several offensive pushes, highlighted by a shot from Kuan-Lin Chen in the 10th minute, saved by Coronel, and a series of corner kicks taken by Taylor Pierce. CBC continued to press with shots from David Ochoa and Angel Castillo, both requiring defensive saves. Despite multiple attempts from both sides, the first half ended scoreless.
Perez stood out for CBC, securing the crucial goal that was the game-winner. Supporting the offense, Magana contributed with an assist and showed his presence with two shots, one on target. Ochoa also played a key role, leading the team with four shots, three of which were on goal, and adding the assist on the game-winner. In the defensive end, Coronel was solid in goal for CBC, making four saves to earn a shutout in the match.
Wagenblatt stood out for TCC with six saves over the course of the match, facing eight shots on target. His efforts in goal provided a strong defensive backbone for the team. On the offensive end, Davyd Fedina made his presence known by leading TCC in shots, taking four attempts with three on goal. Porter Herbig also contributed to the attack, registering both of his shots on goal.
Columbia Basin finished with a 19-7 advantage in shots for the match including 12-2 in the second half. The Titans led 7-6 in corner kicks and 10-6 in team saves.
The Hawks advance to the NWAC Championship match on Sunday, where they will await the winner of Highline against Spokane. CBC will make their first appearance in the championship game since 2022 when they won the title. Tacoma completes a strong season with a 13-5-5 record and second place in the West Region.
