Spokane Wins 4th Women's Soccer Title with 1-0 Victory over Highline
TUKWILA, Wash. — The Spokane women's soccer team defeated Highline 1-0 in the final of the 2025 NWAC Women's Soccer Championship to claim the season title on Sunday at Starfire Stadium.
The Sasquatch earned their fourth title in program history and their second in the past four seasons. After finishing as runner-up in 2023, the Sasquatch are back on top of the NWAC. The title also marks the second for head coach Dan Philp.
The lone goal of the match came in the final minutes of the first half as Ana Thompson scored on a deep free kick that bounced in off the keeper's hands. The Sasquatch showcased their strong defense in the second half to hold the Thunderbirds off the scoreboard. Spokane finished with a 16-11 shot advantage with 10 shots on goal to Highline's three.
Spokane's Mia Miconi was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after she scored two goals in the Sasquatch's 3-0 semifinal win over Tacoma. Miconi had four shots in the final as she created multiple scoring chances.
The match between Spokane and Highline began with Spokane maintaining an aggressive stance. Miconi and Cora Murray challenged Highline's defense early, but goalkeeper Caitlyn McKenzie made crucial saves. The Thunderbirds responded with attempts from Ximena Salmoran and Vanessa Garcia, but both shots went high.
Highline applied pressure early in the second half, with Vanessa Garcia attempting a shot that went wide right at the 53rd minute. Spokane's defense remained firm, with goalkeeper Danika Curtis making a crucial save on a shot by Ariana Mercado in the 53rd minute. Despite several opportunities, Highline struggled to find the back of the net, including a shot by America Hernandez that hit the post in the 67th minute. Sasquatch's offense also had chances but could not extend their lead, with shots by Thompson and Murray both going wide left.
McKenzie stood out for Thunderbirds with a remarkable performance in goal, making eight saves out of nine shots faced. Raighen Wendler, Garcia and Hernandez each had two shots for Highline who finish a strong season with a 15-3-3 record and the 2025 runner up.
